Entrance mats are your first line of defence. They collect dirt, sand and small stones from shoes. But if you never shake or clean them, they reach a point where they’re as dirty as the outside. People step on, grind in the dust, and then track the rest inside.
Taking mats outside and giving them a good shake or beat every few days clears out the trapped debris. That way, they can keep doing their job effectively. Combined with a “wipe your feet” habit and possibly a no-shoes policy indoors, the amount of dust and grit entering the house drops dramatically.
Cleaner mats mean cleaner floors and less sweeping and mopping overall.
